From Pitch to Purpose: GRPF launches second funding round for former player support programmes.
The roar of the crowd fades, the whistle blows for the last time, and for many professional rugby players, a new, often challenging, chapter begins. The Global Rugby Players Foundation (GRPF) is on a pioneering mission to ensure this transition isn't a solitary journey, but a springboard to new purpose and potential. And the exciting news? We are expanding our reach, announcing a second round of funding to empower even more transitioning and former players worldwide.
Since our launch in May 2024, the GRPF has been a beacon of support, driven by the belief that the skills honed on the field – resilience, teamwork, discipline – are powerful assets for life beyond the game. Our unique approach focuses on partnering with trusted organisations already embedded within rugby communities, delivering vital support where players need it most.
"We believe in local solutions with a global impact," explains GRPF CEO Sara Heath. "By dispersing funding to delivery partners, we ensure that support is readily available on the ground, allowing easy access to much-needed guidance." This strategy has already yielded incredible results.
In its inaugural year, the GRPF successfully granted funding to four impactful delivery partners across Ireland, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, and South Africa. These partnerships have blossomed into comprehensive support programmes, offering everything from crucial career guidance and expert business coaching to vital peer-to-peer support and essential mental health screening and support.
The feedback from these pioneering programmes has been nothing short of transformative. Players are not just adapting; they're thriving. As one grateful recipient shared, "The support I received has been invaluable in helping me find my purpose Beyond the Game. You made me see that the skills I developed on the field can translate to new opportunities off it."
Another player highlighted the profound emotional impact: "Just knowing that you guys are still there to support us players when we are finished is a huge help. Everyone is busy and you can start feeling a bit disconnected, not turning up to training everyday anymore, so it feels good to know I can still tap into what I need." And for those feeling adrift, the programs offer a crucial anchor: "I was feeling a bit lost at the start but having a plan now is keeping me focused on moving forward and I am feeling excited at all the opportunities."
Inspired by this overwhelming success, the GRPF is thrilled to announce the opening of applications for its second round of grant funding. This expansion marks a pivotal moment in their journey to achieve a truly global presence, reaching even more players who have dedicated their lives to the sport.
The GRPF is calling upon delivery partners from all corners of the world to consider applying for this vital funding. To ensure the stability and sustainability of these crucial investments, applicants will need to demonstrate a clear track record of supporting transitioning athletes, adhere to robust governance practices, and complete thorough due diligence checks. Whether a World Rugby-affiliated union, an organisation dedicated to athlete welfare or an International Rugby Players-recognised association, the GRPF is seeking partners committed to player well-being.
